We spent days three and four exploring the lake we were on by both canoe and foot. We hiked the portages we hadn’t used, hiked the woods and the stream that flowed out of our lake down to the small river it formed. I also learned a lot about fly fishing for warm water specie from a canoe, something I have thought about doing before given my immediate proximity to the Mighty Mississippi but haven’t had much practice up til now. Took a while to target the right areas but once I figured it out we were regularly catching large mouth bass, smallies in the shallows in the early morning and later evening and despite our best efforts we both managed to miss every pike opportunity that came our way (which wasn’t many). These two days were invaluable regarding the possibilities for fly fishing warm water for me in the future.
